Temperament

French Bulldogs are playful, clownish and affectionate. They're generally friendly with people, children and other pets, and they rarely bark. They can be stubborn and like being the center of attention.

Exercise and energy

Frenchies need modest exercise: two or three short walks a day plus indoor play. Because of their short muzzles, they overheat quickly. Avoid exercise in warm weather, never leave them in a car, and watch for noisy or labored breathing. See seasonal dog care.

Grooming

Grooming is easy: a weekly brush, regular nail trims, and cleaning between facial wrinkles and around the tail pocket to prevent infections.

Training

Smart but sometimes stubborn — keep sessions short and fun with food rewards. House-training can take patience.

Health

This is the key consideration. French Bulldogs are a brachycephalic (flat-faced) breed and commonly suffer from brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS), which can require surgery. They are also prone to spinal problems (IVDD), skin fold infections, allergies, eye problems and ear infections. Most can't give birth naturally. Choose a breeder who selects for open nostrils and more moderate features, and strongly consider pet insurance. They cannot swim safely — always use a life jacket near water.
