How the breed selector works
Each breed in our catalog has ratings from 1 to 5 for energy, shedding, grooming, trainability, friendliness with kids, apartment suitability, barking and suitability for first-time owners. The quiz compares your answers with those ratings and gives each breed a match score.
The results are a starting point, not a final answer. Ratings describe general breed tendencies — individual dogs vary, and upbringing, training and socialization matter as much as genetics.
What to do with your results
- Read each matched breed's profile, especially the "think twice if you…" section.
- Meet adult dogs of those breeds: breed clubs, dog events, breed rescues or friends' dogs.
- Consider mixed breeds with similar traits — an adult rescue dog with a known personality can be an even better match. See mixed-breed dogs.
- Find a responsible source: a health-testing breeder or a reputable shelter or rescue.
Tips for honest answers
- Answer for your typical week, not your best week. If you plan to run every morning but rarely do now, choose the lower activity level.
- Think about the next 10–15 years: kids, moves, job changes.
- If anyone in your home has allergies, remember that no breed is truly hypoallergenic.
