Temperament

Beagles are cheerful, curious and friendly with almost everyone, including children and other dogs. They were bred to hunt in packs, so they like company and may struggle when left alone.

Exercise and energy

Beagles need at least an hour of exercise daily. Their nose rules their brain: once they catch a scent, they may ignore you completely. Keep them on a leash or in a securely fenced area. Sniffing walks and scent games are ideal.

Grooming

Easy: weekly brushing, regular nail trims and frequent ear checks — their long ears are prone to infections.

Training

Beagles are intelligent but independent and easily distracted. They're highly food-motivated, which helps. Keep sessions short and fun. Expect barking and baying — it's part of the breed.

Health

Watch for obesity (Beagles will eat anything — including things they shouldn't, so secure your trash), epilepsy, hypothyroidism, back problems (IVDD), cherry eye and ear infections.
