Temperament

Aussies are intelligent, energetic and loyal, often bonding closely with their family and being reserved with strangers. They have strong herding instincts.

Exercise and energy

They need 1.5–2+ hours of exercise daily, plus mental challenges like training, agility and puzzle toys. Without enough activity, they can become anxious and destructive.

Grooming

Brush weekly (more in shedding season) to prevent mats behind the ears and on the "pants."

Training

Highly trainable and eager to work. Early socialization prevents over-guarding and nervousness.

Health

Aussies may carry the MDR1 gene mutation, which makes certain common drugs dangerous — ask your vet about testing. Also watch for hip dysplasia, eye diseases and epilepsy. Avoid puppies from merle-to-merle breedings, which can cause deafness and blindness.
