Temperament

Pomeranians are curious, confident and lively. They're alert and vocal, often barking at every noise. With socialization, they're friendly and fun companions.

Exercise and energy

Short walks and play sessions — about 30 minutes a day. They enjoy learning tricks.

Grooming

The thick double coat needs brushing several times a week and sheds heavily seasonally. Don't shave it.

Training

Intelligent and trainable, but house-training small dogs takes consistency. Work on barking early.

Health

Watch for tracheal collapse (use a harness), kneecap problems, dental disease, alopecia X (coat loss) and heart problems.
